Danny Harold Rolling was born on May 26th, 1954 in Shreveport, Louisiana he was the eldest of two boys to father James Rolling and his wife Claudia. His father was a police officer who quite obviously should not have been; he regularly beat both his sons and supplemented these beatings with bondage and blindfolds as punishment for indiscretions.

Why do i say their father should not have been a police officer? In addition to frequently beating his children, for real and imagined reasons, James Rolling used to capture stray cats from around the neighbourhood which he would then torture to death, enjoying their screams of pain as they suffered.

His mother was of no help having made excuses for her husband’s extremely strange and violent behaviours, while never supporting either of her sons. When Danny was 9 years old she suffered a nervous breakdown and was not a part of their lives from that point on. This bout of trouble also contributed to Danny failing the 3rd grade

In high school both children had psychological dilemmas and were described by school counsellors as having an inferiority complex and problems with anger management and poor impulse control. By the time he was in his early adolescence Danny had become a heavy drinker and at one stage was caught red handed by his father who handcuffed and arrested him. Courtesy of this he served two weeks in Shreveport’s local jail and not surprisingly upon release he ran away from home after yet another argument with dad.

This pattern of coming and going from the family home would continue for the rest of his life, more prominently during his high school years and due to this he also failed his Sophomore year before dropping out and joining the United States Air Force at the age of 17. Unfortunately for Danny Rolling though his chronic drug and alcohol abuse continued once he was in the USAF and he subsequently served time in a military prison. In 1973 he was given a premature dishonourable discharge along with being diagnosed with an unspecified personality disorder.

Back in Shreveport he was constantly drunk or stoned yet somehow found religion at a local Pentecostal church. Here he met a 19 year old girl by the name of Mather Halko and they married in September 1974. This seemed to settle Rolling down for a period of time although by the following year when they had their first child the marriage was already on the rocks and she left him in 1977.

Resuming his former life of crime Rolling began committing armed robberies and stealing cars. In August 1979 he was convicted and sentenced to 6 years in prison for robbery of a store in Columbus, Georgia and an escape attempt once incarcerated added another year to his sentence. For a reason i have not been able to establish from my research, a public defender advised Rolling to confess to another armed robbery he had committed in July 1979 in Alabama. This netted him an additional 10 year custodial sentence that he would have to serve consecutively as it was committed in a different state to the one he was currently incarcerated in. He started serving this sentence in June 1982 but was for unknown reasons paroled in 1984, only 2 years later.

Once again he returned to Shreveport to live with his father, who was now retired. However home was still a raging battleground and he hit the road again. In July 1985 he robbed a store in Clinton, Mississippi and was arrested the next day in a stolen car. For this indiscretion he was given a 15 year sentence, of which again he only served a very small amount and was paroled in July 1988 after barely 3 years on the inside. And yes, again he returned to Shreveport where he was able to obtain stable employment as an electrician’s apprentice.

By this stage though, Danny Rolling’s dreams had grown increasingly strange and violent. Then on November 6, 1989, Tom Grissom, his 24 yr old daughter Julie and his 8 yr old grandson Sean were found murdered inside their Shreveport home. All had been repeatedly stabbed with a long bladed knife but Julie was quite obviously the killer’s intended or main target. She had been slashed and mutilated, both pre and post-mortem, was covered in bite marks, had been washed down with soap in an attempt to remove any trace evidence and had been posed in a sexually explicit manner.

Investigators were at a loss as to suspects and Rolling was never even on their list. Nonetheless Danny encountered yet more trouble at home and on May 17, 1990 a violent altercation erupted over an amazingly trivial subject – should car windows be rolled up or left down when it is raining? The senior Rolling pulled out a hand gun in a misguided attempt to settle the question but Danny relinquished his father of the pistol before shooting him in the stomach and head. Fearing he had just murdered his father he fled the scene and headed for Louisiana, strangely though his father survived.

Eventually he ended up in Gainesville, Florida and on August 26, 1990 two bodies were discovered in an apartment complex. The victims were those of Sonja Larsen, 18, and Christina Powell, 17 – they had been deceased for approximately 2 days, had both been mutilated with nipples cut off one victim while the other had been sodomised.

At 1:30am the next day Christa Hoyt, an 18 year old student that was a part time employee of the local Sheriff’s office was found murdered in her home. Her naked body had been washed with liquid soap and once again posed in a sexually explicit manner. Further to this she had been decapitated and her severed head was being proudly displayed on her bookshelf, surrounded by mirrors so that the gruesome image projected out her window.

A day later again on August 28, 1990 Tracy Paules and Manual Taboada were both stabbed repeatedly to death. Tracy had been sodomised but apart from that there were no ritualistic overtones from the earlier killings. All three crime scenes had been wiped clean of fingerprints while there was also evidence of blood being removed from the scene – the motive of which was never established.

Social panic took flight as students left Gainesville in droves only 2 weeks into the semester while investigators were focusing their attention to a list of 7 suspects. The spotlight was currently on Edward Humphrey, a local 18 year old that was a diagnosed bipolar sufferer and he also had a history of admission to psychiatric facilities. Known to skip his medication at times he believed Satan was pursuing him – a sign of a paranoid delusions that some sufferers of bipolar are known to endure (the more common type is simply delusions of grandiosity). He had attempted suicide twice, was often involved in physical altercations and was fascinated with ninjas and knives.

His neighbour was a police officer who called him a ‘goddamned weirdo who’s always acting mental’ and odd behaviour seemed to worsen around the time of the murders with him threatening employees at a local bar with slitting their throats for refusing him service on August 24th (the proposed day the first two victims were murdered).

On August 30 he had a violent altercation with his grandmother and was arrested; while in custody police delved deeper into his movements at the time of the killings and could not find any hard evidence to connect him to any of the crimes. Nonetheless he was convicted of assaulting his grandmother on October 10, 1990 and was sentenced to inpatient treatment in Chattahoochee State Hospital.

Danny Rolling though, as usual, was in trouble; he continued committing burglaries and narrowly escaped capture a number of times with police suspecting he was a pusher (drug dealer). He also boasted to acquaintances that he had robbed a local bank but no evidence of this ever came to light. In an attempt to escape some of the heat around him in Gainesville he drove to Tampa in a stolen car and robbed a supermarket there on September 1, 1990. After a number of other burglaries he committed yet another robbery, this time in Ocala on September 7. Police were quick to respond and a high speed pursuit ensued with Rolling eventually crashing his getaway car and fleeing on foot, leaving his $4700 loot behind. He was eventually discovered by police on patrol in the area hiding behind a garbage dumpster and arrested.
Back in Gainesville detectives were examining records of similar murders across the USA courtesy of the ViCAP system which had been in existence since 1985 when the computer gave them the details of the Grissom triple homicide in Shreveport – it cited similar weapons, post-mortem mutilation, washing of the bodies to remove evidence, posing of the corpse and the petite brunette victims as all similar to the homicides they were investigating. Shortly after this it was discovered that Rolling, who was still in custody, was from Shreveport and in addition was wanted for the shooting assault of his father. Pubic hair and tools were then recovered from a camp site where Rolling was living and a substantial material and biological link was established between him and all the murders in Gainesville. DNA was also found to match semen found inside the sodomised victims.

Between September 25 and October 19 of 1991 detectives continued to build their murder case, while Rolling was being convicted of three burglaries and, given his lengthy criminal record, he was given an extremely long custodial sentence – a relief no doubt to detectives.

In November they finally had enough evidence to obtain an indictment on all 5 murders committed in Gainesville and rolling agreed to talk about the killings.

He immediately began to blame his urge to kill on a split personality that he called Gemini. This alter ego apparently loved to make people suffer and Gemini told each individual victim what was planned for them – mutilations, everything – while they were still alive before the ‘festivities’ began.

On February 15, 1994 jury selection finally began after long case related delays but Rolling automatically changed his plea to guilty in a vain attempt to receive some mercy in his sentencing. On April 20, 1994 he was sentenced to die in Florida’s electric chair and he was finally executed on October 25, 2006 by lethal injection due to the abolishment of the electric chair. He was pronounced dead at 6:13pm local time.

Adolfo de Jesus Constanzo was born in Miami on November 1, 1962. He was the younger of two sons to a teenage Cuban immigrant and was still an infant when his father died. Having been widowed, the family moved to Puerto Rico where Adolfo’s mother quickly found a new man and remarried. Shortly after he was baptised Roman Catholic and even served as an altar boy for a time, supposedly accepting the standards of the Roman Catholic faith. When he was 10 the family moved back to Miami and a year later he would lose his stepfather also; but to their advantage this left them well off financially.

Neighbours in Little Havana noticed the family were, to say the least, odd, and Adolfo’s mother is rumoured to be a practising Witch with those who cross her or upset her finding headless goats and chickens on their doorsteps of a morning. By the age of 9, she had introduced her son to Santeria, and had financed multiple trips to Puerto Rico for instruction in voodoo. In 1976 at the age of 14 Adolfo became an apprentice to a practitioner of Palo Mayombe – similar to Santeria in that it developed in Cuba but of an African rather than Caribbean history.

Adolfo’s occult God Father, having grown amazingly rich from influencing his drug dealer associates, imparted his philosophy on the boy: “Let the non believers kill themselves with drugs. We will profit from their foolishness”. While Adolfo’s older brother apparently displayed psychic abilities predicting events such as the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan, Adolfo himself had no such skill-set, even though later in life he would claim to. In 1981 he was arrested twice for shoplifting offences including one offence that included a chainsaw. In addition to this he started to display overt bisexual tendencies with a preference for men.

While on a modelling assignment in Mexico City in 1983, Adolfo spent his spare time telling fortunes with tarot cards in the cities largely known and famous Zona Rosa (touristy district, entertainment hub) and it is here that he collected his first Mexican disciples including Martin Quintana, homosexual psychic Jorge Montes and Omar Orea. Orea had been obsessed with the occult since the age of 15 so it was an appropriate fit for him, but soon after this Adolfo returned to Miami.

<script type="text/javascript"

By 1984 though, Adolfo decided to move to Mexico City on a permanent basis with his mother stating he was searching for ‘new horizons’. There he moved into a house with Quintana and Orea in a strange ménage a trios. As his reputation for magic grew throughout the city he collected additional followers and soon began claiming to be able to see the future. Further to this he started offering ‘limpias’ or ritual cleansings for those who had been cursed by their enemies. According to Adolfo’s own journals he had at least 31 regular customers who paid him up to $4500 for a single ceremony. He had also established a sacrificial menu of sorts; with roosters going for $6 a head, goats for $30, pythons for $450, zebras for $100 and African lion cubs for $3100. One hates to think what the price on a human sacrifice would have been, had he put it in writing…

As can be expected Adolfo lived up to his mentors wildest expectations as he efficiently began charming the wealthy drug dealers around Mexico. They trusted his opinions so much that they actually began to schedule their shipments and meetings around his nonsense predictions. Further again he offered to cast magic for them that would make them invisible to police and bulletproof to enemies. This might sound bizarre, and you may be wondering how someone could be tricked into this but if you take the background of most drug cartels/smugglers in Mexico at the time (Mexican peasant) and combine it with the influence of Brujeria (Spanish witchcraft) they are inclined to believe. As you can imagine, cult leaders are masters of manipulation and they generally have an amazing ability to read people, telling them what they want to hear. This worked a charm with Adolfo’s journals stating that one smuggler alone paid him upwards of $40,000 for magical services over a three year period.

With such exorbitant prices, the customers expected a show, and as usual Adolfo didn’t disappoint, probably more so out of fear than anything else– you’d have to be pretty stupid to disappoint men who carry automatic weapons everywhere and ride around in armour plated limousines. In mid 1985 he and 3 of his disciples raided a graveyard for human bones to start his very own ‘nganga’ – cauldron of blood employed by practitioners of Palo Mayombe. It appears there wasn’t anybody that Adolfo couldn’t charm into his beliefs through his rituals and air of mystery and he managed to recruit a sizeable cross section of Mexican society that included real estate agents, doctors, models and transvestite nightclub performers.

Curious as it may seem, Adolfo’s new career brought him attention from law enforcement but not for the reason you would think; they liked him. At a minimum, 4 Federal Judicial Police joined his cult including Salvador Garcia who was the head of narcotics investigations and Florentino Ventura who retired from the Federal police to lead the Mexican branch of Interpol. Although corruption has always been a significant problem in Mexico, with events such as Federal officers playing hitman to the highest bidding drug cartel devotion to Adolfo ran deeper than any amount of money. They worshipped him as a minor God ; a living conduit to the spirit world.

In 1986 Florentino Ventura introduced Adolfo to the Calzada family – a drug cartel – and he quickly won over the hardnosed smugglers with his charm and magical prowess. Over the next 12 months he profited immensely from this association and by 1987 was able to pay $60,000 for a condominium in Mexico city as well as purchase a small fleet of vehicles including an $80,000 Mercedes Benz. Also, while not practising his magic, he pulled scams of his own; once he posed as a DEA agent and ripped off a medium size cocaine dealer selling the stash through his police contacts for $100,000.

At some stage Adolfo started to offer human sacrifices to his nganga, and to this day no final tally of slayings has been able to be established. Although there are 23 well documented cases, police in Mexico believe it could be as high as 40 pointing to many unsolved slayings in which mutilation has taken place around Mexico City. With his willingness to torture and kill complete strangers, close friends, or anybody in between Adolfo quickly impressed the many ruthless drug cartels smuggling contraband into the United States. Adolfo quickly came to believe he was solely responsible for the Calzada families ongoing success and survival and in April 1987 he demanded a full partnership. Unfortunately for him, or so it may have seemed at the time, they promptly refused.

<script type="text/javascript"

By April 30, 1987, Guillermo Calzada and 6 members of his household vanish under mysterious circumstances and they were reported as missing on 1st of May. When police investigated they noticed melted candles, as well as other strange evidence of a religious ceremony at the Calzada offices. Six days later they started recovering mutilated decomposing bodies from the Zumpango River. In total, 7 bodies were recovered, all of which had sadistic torture marks, fingers, toes and ears had been removed, hearts and sex organs had been excised, part of the spine had been ripped from one of the bodies and two of the bodies had their brains removed. All the missing parts Adolfo had taken to add to his cauldron of blood.

A few months later in July 1987, Salvador Garcia did Adolfo the favour of introducing him to yet another cartel he could con; Elio and Ovidio Hernandez were the leaders. Also in July he met 22 year old Sara Aldrete who was a Mexican national with resident alien status in the United States as she was studying in Brownsville, Texas. Having been charmed by Adolfo, who noted that her birthday was the same date as his mothers (September 6), she eventually ended up in his bed. At the time she had been dating Brownsville drug smuggler Gilbert Sosa, but Adolfo soon put an end to that relationship via an anonymous phone call reporting her infidelity to him. Sara, having nowhere else to turn plunged deeply into Adolfo’s world and became head Witch of his cult, adding her own twists and turns to torturing their sacrificial victims.

By this stage Adolfo’s torture and killings became more elaborate and sadistic as they moved to their new headquarters – a ranch known as Rancho Santa Elena, a plot of desert 32km from Matamoros. On May 28, 1988 Adolfo was gravely disappointed by his next double homicide when he executed Hector de la Fuente, a drug dealer, and Moises Castillo, a farmer, by shooting them. While back in Mexico City he directed cultists to dismember transvestite Ramon Esquivel and to dump his remains on a street corner.

In June 1988 he narrowly escaped being caught in a house raid in Houston, Texas where the authorities seized occult items and the largest ever cocaine shipment for the state.

As events continued to unfold, on August 12, 1988, Ovidio Hernandez and his 2 year old son were kidnapped by a rival drug cartel. The family sought Adolfo’s help and he conducted a human sacrifice at the Rancho Santa Elena, then on August 13, the hostages were released unharmed. As can be expected Adolfo claimed complete credit for this.

Later that same year, on September 17, long time confidant Florentino Ventura killed himself in a murder suicide in Mexico City, taking his wife and a friend with him by unloading a burst of ammunition from an automatic machine gun on them. Then in November 1988 Adolfo sacrificed one of his own cult members, Jorge Gomez, after accusing him of cocaine use – as this was in violation of El Padrino’s statements.
In December 1988 Ovidio Hernandez became a full member of the cult and this ceremony included bloodletting and prayers to the nganga. The following February 14, Valentine’s Day, competing drug smuggler Ezequil Luna was tortured to death on the ranch. Further to this, two other people became impromptu victims in this sacrifice when they inadvertently stumbled into the ceremony as it unfolded.

By this stage of play, Adolfo for no reason would randomly demand a sacrifice, and on February 25, 1989 he did just that. Ovidio Hernandez in the heat of the moment offered up his 14 year old cousin Jose Garcia. Then again on March 13, Adolfo was disappointed by another sacrifice conducted on the ranch when the victim did not scream or plead for his life as Adolfo expected his chosen subjects to. This brought about the beginning of the end for Adolfo and his cult as this dissatisfaction prompted him to demand a Caucasian person to be his next victim of choice. His followers then abducted 21 year old Mark Kilroy from outside a Matamoros saloon. Two weeks later again Sara’s old boyfriend and drug smuggler from Texas, Gilbert Sosa, became yet another victim of the group. By that stage, popular pre-med student at the University of Texas, Mark Kilroy, had been reported missing and family and politicians were desperately and forcefully pushing for a full blown international investigation; soon they received what they asked for when the situation spiralled into an international level incident.

In the same month of March Mexican police were again conducting one of their random anti-drug campaigns setting up roadblocks, conducting searches and patrolling the border district for smugglers. On April 1, Victor Sauceda, an ex police officer turned gangster was sacrificed at the ranch and the message Adolfo received from the spirit world was positive; giving the cultists the sign they needed to move half a tonne of marijuana across the border into the United States a week later. Then on April 9, Serafin Hernandez was returning from Brownsville, Texas, the location they had smuggled the drugs to, heading to a meet with Adolfo back on the Mexican side of the border. Seeing a roadblock ahead, and so strongly believing in Adolfo’s magical abilities, he drove straight through it and continued to ignore the cars that were pursuing him all the way to the meet location. Surprised, he jumped from his vehicle and became overly aggressive, threatening officers and daring them to shoot him as he also believed the bullets would simply bounce off. Unfortunately for him, they didn’t, and arrested him instead along with another cult member David Martinez.

Police then drove the duo to the ranch where a preliminary search was conducted that netted marijuana and firearms. While authorities were conducting their enquiries at the property two other followers inadvertently got caught up in the mess and were promptly arrested as well. The first two arrestees as well as the new ones, Elio Hernandez and Sergio Martinez, were taken back to the police station and interrogated. Upon being interviewed all four prisoners proudly told their tales of black magic, torture and human sacrifice.

The next morning police returned to the ranch to conduct a full scale search and to arrest any further cult members. In a shed they found Adolfo’s nganga – cauldron of blood – and in it they found not only blood but spiders, scorpions, a dead black cat, a turtle shell, human bones and a human brain. Cultists caught at the property pointed to where bodies were buried and by April 16 a total of 15 corpses had been recovered including two renegade Federal officers – Joaquin Manzo and Miguel Garcia – as well as 3 people that would never be identified.

With this, the hunt began for Adolfo; they raided his house in Atizapan on April 17, only to find stockpiles of gay pornography and a hidden ritual chamber. Unbeknownst to them, he was already hiding out in a small apartment in Mexico City with Sara Aldrete and three of his disciples. On May 2, in an attempt to save herself, Sara tossed a written note out the window of the apartment they were hiding out in hoping a passerby would raise the alarm: “Please call the judicial police and tell them that in this building are those that they are seeking. Give them the address, fourth floor. Tell them that a woman is being held hostage. I beg for this, because what I want most is to talk – or they’re going to kill the girl.” The note was found, and read by somebody walking down the street but unfortunately for her they thought it was nothing but a sick prank and didn’t give it a second thought until it was too late.

Then, a month later again on May 6, 1989, neighbours call the police after hearing a violent argument from inside Adolfo’s apartment where they believed they also heard gunshots. Police arrive at the scene and immediately take fire from Adolfo and colleagues who unleash with automatic weapons fire – a 45 minute fire fight ensues until Adolfo realises there is no hope of escape. Facing a life in prison he orders one of his followers, Alvaro da Leon Valdez, who is coincidently a professional hitman with the nickname El Duby, to kill him and Martin Quintana. Valdez recalls: “He told me to kill him and Martin. I told him I couldn’t do it, but he hit me in the face and threatened me that everything would go bad for me in hell. Then he hugged Martin, and I just stood in front of them and shot them with a machine gun.”

Having killed Adolfo and Martin, and not willing to put up any more resistance, the police storm the apartment and arrest Aldrete and Valdez.

In the aftermath of the raid fourteen cult members are indicted on a broad range of charges ranging from multiple murders, weapons and narcotic violations, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. In August 1990 El Duby was convicted of the murders of Adolfo and Martin and given a 30 year prison sentence. Cult members Juan Fragosa and Jorge Montes were both indicted and then later convicted of the murder of Ramon Esquivel and given 35 year sentences each while Omar Orea, having been convicted of the same murder died of AIDS before being sentenced. Sara Aldrete, while acquitted of the Adolfo and Martin murders was given a six year custodial sentence for criminal association. Subsequently, in 1994, when she was about to be paroled on those charges, Aldrete suffered an unavoidable and devastating blow; authorities were finally able to indict her on multiple murder charges of which she was convicted and was given a further 60 year sentence. The final body count, as stated, remains unknown and it seems the religion lives on, even if this particular cult doesn’t, as in June 1989, Martin Quintanas sister told police that Adolfo’s first Madrina is still practising her intense version of blood magic in Guadalajara. Before his death Orea stated from prison: “I don’t think that the religion will end with us, because it has a lot of people in it. They have found a temple in Monterrey that isn’t even related to us. It will continue.”

In the world of forensics there are an amazingly vast number of tests that can be conducted on a material in order to establish various things that may be useful in a trial. Listed below are just a few of the more commonly used techniques:

X-Ray Diffraction
The whole purpose of x-ray diffraction is to determine the atomic structure of a substance, but how does it work i hear you ask. By firing x-rays at a sample of the substance results can be recorded onto a sheet of photographic paper when said rays collide with the its own atoms.

The X-rays bounce off and form unique patterns on the photographic paper based upon the nature of the atoms they actually hit.

Electrophoresis
When it comes to DNA profiling there are a number of different procedures that can be conducted on biological matter in order to determine a genetic fingerprint. One of the ways that this biological matter is separated is through electrophoresis. Both blood and semen can be submitted to this process – it uses an electric current in order to separate the different sized molecules in proteins, enabling them to be submitted for further analysis.

//-->

<script type="text/javascript"

Chromatography
There are a number of different methods that exist in chromatography, all of which are based around a similar scientific principle and all of which have been scientifically proven. It is primarily used to identify different chemicals as in dyes, drugs and residue found in dirt. It also has the ability to identify DNA, proteins and genes from tiny samples. At the end of the day the process is designed in such a way that it separates out the various components from each substance in order for them to be identified.

Spectrometry
After individual components of a sample have been separated is when this forensic method comes into its own. What it does is test a components light absorption and reflection qualities by by using a device called a spectrophotometer. By using this device, forensic experts are able to see exactly which colours of light are affected by a sample, and subsequently compare the obtained sample with samples of material they already have in their databases with results represented in graphs.

Mass Spectrometry
While it contains the title of the previous forensic technique, the actual methods utilised are completely different to its predecessor. Mass spectrometry uses high energy electrons in order to literally ‘knock’ electrons out of the samples molecules which in turn causes them to fall apart. After this process is completed a mass spectrometer uses an electrical or magnetic field to measure each individual pieces mass.

Particular molecules will always break into a predictable range of pieces with no chance that two different molecules will break into identical pieces. Given this, forensic professionals are able to take any sample of material and ascertain exactly what chemical components are within it.

//-->

Neutron Activation Analysis
This is one of the most amazing and accurate forensic techniques in the book – not that forensic techniques are ever inaccurate, but this particular method can detect whether atoms from a particular element are present in a sample down to levels as low as one part per billion. This particular forensic method exposes samples to gamma rays in order to look through to the centre of an atom within a sample thereby identifying what atoms are actually present. It is used to detect trace elements in not only drugs and gunpowder but also metals, paint, soil and hair.

Said spree left 6 people dead and 19 others injured with the victims including pedestrians, cyclists, dogs and even horses but this week co-defendant Samuel Dietman, who is the primary witness against Hausner and who has pleaded guilty to sometimes joining him on the crimes is pleading for leniency, hoping to avoid the death penalty.

The prosecutors though seem to be doing a very good job of convincing the jury otherwise, as they opened by meticulously detailing the profiles and details of other serial shooter cases.

In total he killed only 5 people but did so more in an extended ‘spree killing’ style.

For your viewing pleasure we have a streaming copy of Crime Investigation Australia’s documentary on the subject. If you would like to purchase the box set of episodes (6 DVD’s in total) i suggest you head to Crime & Investigation Channel’s website and buy it. It’s nice and cheap for a 6 DVD set too and covers approximately 15 major crimes (in the first season). You’ll have to go to the CIA link on the menu system and from there you can purchase it but trust me, it’s worth it.

For a reason that i have been unable to put a finger on, six of the top seventeen cases of murder/mass murder/serial killing have taken place in Asian countries (China, Japan, Korea). This could be due to any number of reasons, the first one that comes to mind is population size, but i’ve not done any research into this so it is simply guess work at the moment.

Topping out that list of seventeen events is the Uiryeong Massacre, perpetrated by a South Korean police officer back in 1982. Being only a baby at the time i’m unsure whether this event gained widespread media coverage in the Western world but one would seriously hope so as 57 people were murdered and another 35 were injured in this callous, although spur of the moment – planned attack – on an entire community.

Background
On the afternoon of April 26th, 1982, Woo Bum-kon had an argument with his live in girlfriend Chun Mal-soon. Storming from the house he headed for his police department where he hung out at the armory and began drinking heavily until he was severely intoxicated. It is unclear whether Woo had decided what he was going to do already, before beginning to drink, or if he decided to commit this heinous act once intoxicated, but the end result was the same.

Taking a rifle and grenades from the available arsenal in the armory, he headed to the local telephone exchange around dinner time where he murdered three exchange employees – supposedly to eliminate the ability for people in the community to be able to reach emergency services once he undertook his rampage.

Upon leaving the telephone exchange he headed for local houses, and systematically walked from one to another, using his position as a police officer to gain the occupants trust and subsequently access to their homes. Upon entering their houses he would murder them – usually by shooting – but in one instance he used a grenade to kill an entire family.

Over the course of approximately 8 hours, and having murdered people in five villages, Woo took his final two grenades and strapped them to his body. He then lit the fuses of the grenades while holding three more people hostage and as a result killed himself and said hostages.

It was found through witness comments including those by his then girlfriend that Woo had a major inferiority complex and had also taken a large amount of abuse from villagers for living with his girlfriend before they were married.

Personally it seems that due to his inferiority complex, and obviously assuming that after his argument with his girlfriend, that they were going to break up, his sense of pride/shame kicked in and in his eyes he probably had no other choice. He quite obviously did not want to face the community that had beseeched him with insults for living with someone he was not married to, and as a result, upon making his choice to end his own life, decided to take out his aggression and pain on the same community that had ‘attacked’ him. Another case in a long line of modern day cases where a person with major self-esteem and other related issues has destroyed not only their own life as well as the lives of many others around them.
