A parole violator that Oakland police attempted to stop because he matched the description of a rape suspect reached for a semi-automatic pistol in his waistband and attempted to fire on them before being shot dead at the scene.

Parnell Smith, 36, was on parole for narcotics offences when police attempted to stop him on 16th Avenue in East Oakland due to the fact he matched the description of a suspected rapist even down to the cane that he carried.

Investigations will continue but police are not looking for any additional suspects, even though multiple shots were fired in numerous locations. Police ballistic experts are attempting to decipher how many shots were fired and by whom.
