So… like… what is forensic psychology?
This has to be my favourite discipline within the forensic field, and one that i am personally very involved with (i am currently working towards my Master of Forensic Psychology degree). But for the ‘newbies’ the role a forensic psychologist actually plays in the real world can be somewhat confusing – partly due to Hollywood’s version of what a forensic psychologist does. Forensic psychologists are classed as scientist-practitioners as they are constantly applying their skills and psychological knowledge to the understanding and functioning of the criminal justice system as a whole.
The Syndrome of Decay & Growth
Eric Fromm (1900 – 1980) was a well known personality theorist who was initially part of the Freudian school of thought before breaking away. He suggests that people who are psychologically disturbed may also have the inability to love and fail to establish meaningful unions. He focused the bulk of his attention to three main psychological disorders which he used to put forward his ideas known as the ‘syndrome of decay’ and the ‘syndrome of growth’.
For those of you that frequent our site, it will come as no surprise to you that we have expanded the articles we were/are planning to write. We had always planned on running two individual websites – one dedicated to case files and forensics (
lifetakers.com) and one dedicated to the psychology of killers and general abnormal psychological disorders (
bloodsoaked-memories.com). This has proved harder to do than expected; in saying that, we have decided to merge both websites as we hadn’t even begun adding content to the second, and given the amount of time, effort, money and coding/design involved in ‘re-inventing the wheel’ we have decided to simply alter this website slightly and start adding the content here instead.
Crime Scene Basics – First Responder & Forensics
The various forensic disciplines may run a vast number of tests once evidence has been collected from a crime scene but there is an immense amount of work that needs to be conducted before they get to this stage. This article will focus on those procedures and the job of first responders, whether they are police, paramedics or other emergency services, as well as the roles of crime scene investigators once they are called out.
Death Penalty Racial Bias?
I used to be all for the death penalty – i figured that the legal system did such a great job that never in my wildest dreams would innocent people be sent to prison, let alone be sentenced to death. Naive, i know, but i was young, misinformed and maybe even in a little bit of denial? But these days, although i’m still happy to see certain offenders ‘get whats coming to them’ i’m a lot more cautious. Cases such as the highly controversial ‘West Memphis Three’ as well as other cases i’ve read about over the past few years where death row inmates have been exonerated after years on death row have made me start questioning the criminal justice systems effectiveness for extraditing the truth.
Into The Mind
Looking into the mind of a career criminal, we find an inmate in a Kentucky prison named Alex. Presented in this video is a bit of information about him, and how life on the inside can change a person significantly. Not knowing anything about Alex apart from the crimes he has been imprisoned for, is it possible that there was ever a chance for his rehabilitation? (more…)
